Lost or Damaged - Canadian Citizenship Certificate
Replacing a Canadian Citizenship Certificate or Card
If your Canadian citizenship certificate or card is lost, stolen, or damaged, you should apply for a replacement as soon as possible.
Your original Canadian citizenship certificate is essential proof of your status as a Canadian citizen. To obtain a replacement, you will need to submit:
-
A completed application to replace your citizenship certificate
-
A supplementary declaration explaining what happened to the original document
-
Government-issued identification to verify your identity
Important Update:
As of February 1, 2012, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) no longer issues wallet-sized citizenship cards (with photos). Instead, they now issue a letter-sized citizenship certificate without a photograph. This certificate is a legal document confirming Canadian citizenship status and replaces the older card.
⚠️ A Canadian citizenship certificate is not a travel or identity document. You’ll need your original certificate to apply for a Canadian passport.
