Canadian Travel Document - Adult

If you are a Canadian citizen and plan to travel internationally, you can apply for a Canadian Travel Document. This document allows you to travel locally and globally and is recognized as valid travel identification worldwide.

Eligibility Criteria for an Adult Canadian Travel Document

You may apply for a Canadian Travel Document if:

  • You do not currently have a valid Canadian Travel Document

  • Your last Canadian Travel Document was issued within the past 15 years

  • Your existing Travel Document was issued when you were under 16 years old

  • You need to update your personal information on your current Travel Document

  • Your current Travel Document was valid for less than five years

Guarantor Requirements

To apply for a new Canadian Travel Document, you need a guarantor who confirms your identity and supports your application. A guarantor must:

  • Have known you personally for at least two years

  • Live in Canada or the United States

  • Be able to communicate in English or French

There are three acceptable types of guarantors:

  1. Canadian Guarantor: The Guarantor must hold a valid Canadian passport.

  2. Professional Guarantor: The Guarantor must be a member of a profession approved by Passport Canada (e.g., doctors, lawyers, notaries, etc.).

  3. No Guarantor Available: If you cannot provide a guarantor, you must complete a Statutory Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor Form.
