Canadian Citizenship Certificate – Correction / Name Change

How to Correct or Update Your Citizenship Certificate

To correct or update your Canadian citizenship certificate, you must submit the following:

  • A completed application for a replacement citizenship certificate

  • A supplementary declaration detailing the correction or change requested

  • A copy of your valid government-issued identification showing the updated information

  • Legal documentation supporting the correction (such as a name change certificate, birth certificate, or court order)

Note:
If you have changed your last name due to marriage, you are not required to update your citizenship certificate unless you choose to do so.

Important Update

Since February 1, 2012, the Government of Canada no longer issues wallet-sized citizenship cards with photographs.

Instead, IRCC issues a letter-sized Canadian Citizenship Certificate, which is the official legal document confirming your Canadian citizenship status.

⚠️ Important:
A Canadian citizenship certificate is not a travel or identity document. You must present your original citizenship certificate when applying for a Canadian passport.
