Certified Quebec Birth Records for Canadian Citizenship by Descent Services
To support an application for Proof of Canadian Citizenship (Citizenship by Descent), applicants are generally required to provide documentary evidence establishing their direct line of descent from a Canadian-born ancestor. Depending on the circumstances, this may include an official Canadian birth certificate, a certified historic birth record, a Canadian Citizenship Certificate, or other documentary evidence accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Why Certified Birth Records Matter
Following the amendments to the Canadian Citizenship Act (Bill C-3), many individuals born outside Canada may now qualify for Canadian citizenship through a Canadian-born parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, or an earlier Canadian-born ancestor.
One of the most important requirements is establishing an unbroken documentary chain connecting the applicant to the Canadian-born ancestor.
Depending on your circumstances, IRCC may require evidence such as:
- an official Canadian birth certificate;
- a certified historic birth record issued by the appropriate provincial archive;
- a Canadian Citizenship Certificate; or
- Other supporting documentary evidence accepted by IRCC.
Our office helps clients identify, locate, and obtain the appropriate certified records needed to support their citizenship application.
Historic Birth Records from Quebec
The authority responsible for issuing certified birth records depends on when the birth was registered.
Birth records from approximately the last 100 years are generally maintained by the Directeur de l'état civil du Québec.
Many historic Quebec birth records created more than approximately 100 years ago are preserved by Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ), which can issue certified archival copies.
Note: IRCC does not accept Quebec birth or marriage certificates issued before January 1, 1994, in their original form. For events before that date, applicants generally need a certified reproduction from BAnQ or a reissued certificate from the Directeur de l'état civil.
You may request certified records directly from the Directeur de l'état civil du Québec or Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ). Alternatively, you may authorize our office to conduct the necessary genealogical research and obtain the records on your behalf.
