Canadian Historic Certified Birth Records Services

To support an application for Proof of Canadian Citizenship (Citizenship by Descent), applicants are generally required to provide documentary evidence establishing their direct line of descent from a Canadian-born ancestor. Depending on the circumstances, this may include an official Canadian birth certificate, a certified historic birth record, a Canadian Citizenship Certificate, or other documentary evidence accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Why Certified Birth Records Matter

Following the amendments to the Canadian Citizenship Act (Bill C-3), many individuals born outside Canada may now qualify for Canadian citizenship through a Canadian-born parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, or an earlier Canadian-born ancestor.

One of the most important requirements is establishing an unbroken documentary chain connecting the applicant to the Canadian-born ancestor.

Depending on your circumstances, IRCC may require evidence such as:

• an official Canadian birth certificate;
• a certified historic birth record issued by the appropriate provincial archive;
• a Canadian Citizenship Certificate; or

Historic Canadian Birth Records

The authority responsible for issuing certified birth records depends on where and when the birth was registered.

Birth records from approximately the last 100 years are generally maintained by the Provincial Vital Statistics office or the relevant provincial authority, such as eHealth or the Registrar General.

Many historic birth records created more than approximately 100 years ago are preserved by the Provincial Archives, which can issue certified archival copies.

IRCC does not accept screenshots or printouts of birth or marriage records from genealogy websites like Ancestry.com. These sites hold impressive historical archives, but they are not a substitute for a certified record. To apply for Canadian citizenship by descent, IRCC requires proof of birth, certified by the relevant provincial authority (such as a provincial archive), confirming that the document is authentic and unaltered.

You may contact the appropriate provincial authority directly to request a certified copy of your Canadian ancestor's birth record.
