Canadian Citizenship by descent (Proof)
Do You Have a Birthright to Canadian Citizenship?
If you were born outside Canada and one of your parents or grandparents was a Canadian citizen at the time of your birth, you may already be a Canadian citizen by descent.
In such cases, you do not apply to “become” a Canadian citizen. Instead, you apply for Proof of Canadian Citizenship, which confirms your status.
In many situations, this may also mean you hold dual citizenship: Canada and your country of birth.
Why Apply for a Canadian Citizenship Certificate?
A Canadian citizenship certificate is the official document that confirms your citizenship status. With it, you may be able to:
✅ Live, study, and work in Canada without a visa, study permit, or work permit
✅ Apply for a Canadian passport
✅ Access the rights and benefits associated with Canadian citizenship
You May Be Eligible for Proof of Canadian Citizenship If:
- You were born outside Canada, and one of your parents was a Canadian citizen at the time of your birth
- Your child was born outside Canada, and you or the child’s other parent was a Canadian citizen at the time of birth
- You were born outside Canada, and one of your grandparents was a Canadian citizen when you were born (eligibility depends on current or evolving legislation)
- You were born in Canada and require official proof of Canadian citizenship
