Lost or Damaged Canadian Citizenship Certificate

Replacing a Canadian Citizenship Certificate or Card

If your Canadian citizenship certificate or citizenship card has been lost, stolen, or damaged, you should apply for a replacement as soon as possible.

Your citizenship certificate is the official proof of your Canadian citizenship status. To request a replacement, you must submit:

  • A completed Application to Replace a Citizenship Certificate
  • supplementary declaration explaining the loss, theft, or damage
  • Government-issued identification to confirm your identity

⚠️ Important Notice

As of February 1, 2012Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) no longer issues wallet-sized citizenship cards with photographs.

IRCC now issues a letter-sized Canadian Citizenship Certificate without a photo. This document is the official legal proof of Canadian citizenship and fully replaces the former citizenship card.
